People who work around EPA data often mash two products together: ECHO Notify and a homemade watch on the public warehouse. They are not the same thing.
ECHO Notify is EPA’s own alert product. It tells you when your criteria match activity EPA chooses to push. It is useful for permittees, community groups, and anyone who wants EPA’s official subscription.
SNCAlert is something else. Once a week we download the ECHO Exporter zip — the bulk snapshot EPA documents for large pulls — and we look for status flips: a facility that was not in SNC/HPV last week and is this week, or a new formal enforcement action / penalty date. We do not page the 1.5 million-facility REST index. EPA has said that robotic REST paging of the whole inventory is the wrong tool.
Why a sales desk cares about the distinction
ECHO Notify is built for awareness. A BD desk is built for pipeline. You do not need every notice of violation on every street. You need the week a site crossed a line that usually means counsel and consultants get hired: Significant Noncompliance, High Priority Violation, or a published formal action with a penalty.
That is a narrower list. It is also a list you can filter by state, NAICS prefix, program (CAA / CWA / RCRA), and a penalty floor.
What “weekly” really means
The Exporter is a snapshot. If a state delayed a data load, the flip shows up when EPA publishes it, not the day the inspector left the plant. If two formal actions land in the same week, you still see one “new formal action” event for that cycle. If a flag flips back the next Saturday, that is a later cycle.
SNCAlert emails after the ingest, not in real time. The public teaser on the homepage is name and state only for the latest cycle. Street, NAICS, and penalty dollars stay on the signed-in desk.
How to talk about the source
Cite EPA ECHO. Link the DFR. Do not use EPA logos. Do not say SNCAlert is endorsed by EPA. Record of Sale, LLC operates the service; questions go to publisher@noticenearby.com.
Read SNC vs HPV if you need the program labels in plain English, or pricing if you want the weekly list instead of running the zip yourself.
